Renfrew Educational Services has been a leader in education for children with special needs, and their typically developing peers, in the City of Calgary since 1974. Starting as a community based kindergarten program in the community of Renfrew, we have since grown to have a student population of over 650 in five locations throughout Calgary.

Increased demand for our unique educational services and the need to extend the program to Grade 6 meant that a new school had to be built. Through our organization's efforts and the outstanding generosity of corporate Calgary, Renfrew Educational Services opened its Main School, in September 1998.

In 1999, Renfrew opened its Special Services Centre in the Bowness area of the city with expanded services for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Cerebral Palsy.

Further demand for specialized programs and services for children in the south part of Calgary meant another fund raising effort that resulted in the opening of our Sundance Centre in the fall of 1999 and an expansion to that centre which opened in January 2008.

Renfrew recently opened our new location in the Child Development Centre located adjacent to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in northwest Calgary. This new centre opened in January 2010, and houses specialized classrooms and our Community Services department. In the 2008/2009 school year, staff in Community Services travelled all over the Calgary area, serving over 4000 students in public and independent schools.

In 2010, three of our centres went through a name change. Our Main School became the Janice McTighe Centre -an acknowledgement of her continuing vision and dedication to the organization she started in 1974. Our Special Services Centre became the Bowness Centre. The former Bowness Centre was renamed the Silverwood Centre.

Renfrew is proud of its growth and of the work accomplished. We are making a difference in the lives of thousands of children each year.
